OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to describe a giant aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery in a patient believed to have Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS). KTS is a rare disorder most commonly characterized by venous angiodysplasia. Arterial abnormalities in this setting are exceedingly rare.
METHODS: Case study.
RESULTS: A 60 year-old male presented with a symptomatic right superficial femoral artery aneurysm measuring 9.9 x 10.4 x 17.5 cm. Aneurysmectomy and synthetic bypass grafting was performed successfully. Additionally the patient presented with a history of corrected limb length discrepancy, a port-wine stain, and vena marginalis lateralis. He is believed to have Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome. Arterial abnormalities in KTS are extremely rare as is the size of the aneurysm. In general, patients with KTS commonly develop vascular complications that may require conservative or surgical treatment. Both endovascular and open surgical techniques may be utilized depending on the situation.
CONCLUSIONS: This report describes a case of superficial femoral artery aneurysm in a patient with KTS. Arterial malformations are rare in patients with KTS and a superficial femoral artery aneurysm of this size has not been previously reported. KTS is a rare disorder that requires life-long care by vascular surgeons.
