Introduction: Many patients seen in the vascular office present with ulcerations, often in the lower extremities. These ulcerations can be caused by a variety of causes including infection, arterial disease, or venous disease. Traditionally, treatment varies, depending on the apparent cause of the ulcer. Usually ulcers of the foot are felt to be arterial origin. It has been observed in our office, however, that when treating some patients who have below the ankle ulcers and foot swelling with venous treatment, specifically an Unna boot, the patients’ ulcer heal.
Methods: The office records of fourteen patients who had these “non-venous” disease were examined. All patients with below the ankle ulcers with foot swelling were given a trial of treatment using weekly application of Unna boots.
Results: Of these fourteen patients, six were male and eight were female. The average age for 64 years old. Of the fourteen patients, twelve had healing of the wound with Unna boot treatments. Of these twelve patients who had positive outcomes, 50% had their ulcers healed in four weeks or less.
Conclusion: As seen by the results of this data, Unna boot therapy may is an effective treatment for selected wounds even below the ankle joint.
